Workplace-bullying2Most existing literature on bullying in the workplace tend to focus on the interaction between the bully and their target.

However, the organizational environment plays a role in creating and sustaining bad behavior.

Here are five organizational characteristics that contribute to poor workplace relationships:

  1. extremely competitive obsession with outcomes
  2. recruitment, promotion, and reward systems which focus on individuals interpersonal aggressiveness and length of service rather than emotional intelligence
  3. focus on short-term and not long-term planning
  4. narrow definitions of illegal incidents
  5. promotion of fear as a dominant desired workplace emotion
